Where do your salary numbers come from?
They come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Every wage figure on this site is a published OEWS number for the occupation's SOC code, from the May 2025 release, printed as the BLS printed it. On a city page we show the figures the BLS publishes for that city's metro area; where it suppressed an occupation locally - it does that when the local sample is too small - we show the national figures and label them as national. We never scale a wage to fit a city. You can check any number against the source file linked on the Data Sources page.
How often is the data updated?
Tax brackets are updated for each tax year. Wage baselines and cost-of-living indices are reviewed by hand rather than on an automated pipeline, so treat the reference release shown on each page as the level they were last calibrated to.
Are your calculators free?
Yes, and there is nothing else to buy. Every calculator, comparison and export on the site is free and needs no account. The site is supported by advertising.
Do you store the data I enter into calculators?
No — calculator inputs are processed in your browser and are not stored on our servers.
Why do salaries vary so much between cities?
Cost of living, housing, talent supply, and industry concentration all influence local wage levels. We capture this with a city-by-city COL index calibrated to the US national average (index 100).
Do you cover Canada?
No - the United States only. The wage source is the BLS OEWS release, which covers the US. We used to list Canadian cities, but there was no Canadian wage data behind them, so they have been removed rather than shown with US figures. The take-home pay calculator still handles Canadian federal and provincial tax, because that runs on a salary you type in.
